Relax and Reset: A 3-Night Hunter Valley Itinerary
Most Hunter Valley itineraries try to fit everything in. This one does the opposite. This is a 3-night, 4-day Hunter Valley getaway built around space, slowness, and the particular pleasure of having nowhere urgent to be. It works for couples, groups of friends, girls’ getaways, hens trips, and anyone who is ready to relax and reset.
Your base is Palmers Lane Estate on 50 acres in Pokolbin, a collection of just ten self-contained houses and cottages with a pool, fire pit, tennis court, complimentary games and your own private deck that earns its keep every single evening. From here, the Hunter Valley’s best restorative experiences are either on the property or just a short drive away.
This itinerary suits a midweek stay just as well as a weekend. In fact, if your schedule allows it, arriving Sunday or Monday and leaving Wednesday or Thursday means quieter cellar doors, a better chance of securing that essential restaurant reservation, and a stillness on the property that a peak weekend cannot match.
Day 1: Arrive, Breathe, Begin
An easy arrival to wine country with a gentle start to your relax and reset getaway.
Afternoon: Settle In
Aim to arrive in the early afternoon. Check in from 2pm, walk the grounds, find your cottage’s rhythm. Palmers Lane Estate sprawls across 50 acres, so take a slow stroll on foot or bring your bike for a gentle roll around the grounds.
In the warmer months, the pool is the natural first stop. For a winter escape, settle in around the fire pit and communal BBQ area instead. If you are travelling with younger guests, the playground is ready and waiting after your drive.
Evening: Sunsetters on the Deck
This is the ritual that every Palmers Lane Estate stay is built around. Drinks on the deck as the light changes over the rolling countryside, no particular plan, no particular rush. Fire up the BBQ if you have stocked the fridge, or keep it simple with the cheese platter that arrived with you. The evening does the rest.
Day 2: Restore
Today is the heart of the stay. The goal is to feel noticeably better by the time evening arrives.
Morning: Coffee on the Deck, Then Yoga or a Massage
Start with coffee on the deck and soak up the morning as the resident kangaroos begin their day grazing across the estate’s open grounds. The distant sound of horses and the early morning birds do the rest.
If you added a breakfast pack to your stay, this is the morning it earns its place. Fresh provisions waiting in the kitchen mean no one has to think about where to go or what to organise. Breakfast at your own pace, on your own deck, with nowhere to be.
After a slow start, a yoga session or mobile massage takes things down another gear. If you have arranged an instructor or therapist to come to the property, the grounds offer space, privacy, and the particular quiet of a Hunter Valley morning. The open lawn is well suited to an outdoor session when the weather allows.
We have written a full guide to Hunter Valley yoga retreats if you want to explore that further, including how to create your own retreat experience at Palmers Lane Estate.
Midday: Long Lunch at Bistro Molines
Drive to Mount View for lunch at Bistro Molines. Robert and Sally Molines have been cooking French cuisine in the Hunter Valley since the early 1970s, and the restaurant carries that history with considerable ease. The setting, with views over rolling hills and vineyards, is exceptional on a clear day.
Allow at least two hours and book well in advance. Bistro Molines is consistently one of the most sought-after tables in the Hunter Valley, and walk-ins are rarely possible. This is not a meal to rush.
Afternoon: Hunter Valley Gardens
From Bistro Molines, make your way to Hunter Valley Gardens in Pokolbin. The gardens span 10 themed areas and an unhurried walk through them is one of the genuinely restorative things you can do in the region. The scale means even a slow visit takes the best part of two hours, which after a long lunch is exactly right.
Check what is on during your stay. The gardens host seasonal events and light installations at various points through the year, including Snow Time in the Garden over winter months and Christmas Lights Spectacular during the summer.
Evening: Back to the Estate
Return to Palmers Lane Estate, freshen up, and reconvene at the fire pit. After a day like this one, tonight is simple: good wine, the fire, easy company.
Day 3: Explore
Enjoy another slow start. Pour your coffee, slip on your walking shoes, and take a gentle stroll around the estate before the day begins in earnest.
Morning: Paint and Sip at Palmers Lane Estate
One of the most popular on-property activities is the Paint and Sip. Set up on the deck or on the grounds, pour your complimentary Palmers Lane Estate wine, and spend a couple of hours painting together. No experience required. The results are not the point.
This is the kind of activity that creates the photographs everyone keeps. It is easy, inclusive, and produces a mood that carries through the rest of the day.
Afternoon: The Palmers Lane Wine Eco Trail
After your creative morning session, stroll, cycle or drive the Palmers Lane Wine Eco Trail. Starting at Horner Wines, the trail takes you to John Wallace Wines and then onto Moorebank Vineyard, before finishing your cellar door tastings at Calais Estate. Each a boutique family producer with a cellar door that rewards visitors who are not in a hurry.
If your stay includes a Friday or Saturday, factor in dinner at Entwine Food Hub at Calais Estate, 151 Palmers Lane, open from 5:30pm Friday and Saturday evenings.
Cellar Doors Beyond Palmers Lane
Drive into Pokolbin for a wider tasting experience. Brokenwood Wines is one of the region’s most celebrated producers, with a state-of-the-art cellar door on McDonalds Road that includes a tasting room, outdoor terrace, wine museum, and a lounge area where you can sit with a glass of their Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz for as long as the afternoon allows.
Audrey Wilkinson offers a different kind of afternoon. Perched at the foot of the Brokenback Mountain Ranges on De Beyers Road, the cellar door is one of the most visited in the region, and the elevated setting with its panoramic vineyard views gives you a good reason to stay a little longer than you planned. Open daily from 10am to 5pm, with a range of tasting experiences on offer.
Hungerford Hill is worth a stop for those who like a bit of history with their glass. The estate on Broke Road traces its roots to the 1960s and stewards the Dalwood Vineyard, widely regarded as the birthplace of Australian wine. The cellar door is open seven days from 10am to 5pm, with a broad range covering Hunter Valley Semillon and Shiraz alongside cool climate varietals from Hilltops and Tumbarumba. A Halliday Wine Companion 5 Star Winery and a good option for groups with varied wine knowledge.
Evening: Casual Dinner Out
After a day of tastings, keep dinner easy. Choose from some of our favourites including Harrigans, Nineteen or 4 Pines at the Farm.
Day 4: The Slow Departure
Leave the last morning free. This is non-negotiable.
Morning: One Last Coffee on the Deck
The final morning at Palmers Lane Estate has a particular quality to it. No itinerary, no agenda, just the deck and a proper coffee. Let it go slowly. This is the part of the stay that confirms whether three nights was the right call. It always is.
A game of giant chess on the lawn, a last wander through the property, a final word with your hosts Guy and Sandra on the way out. Then the drive home, which feels considerably easier when you are not rushing it.
Making It Work for Groups
Hens Getaways, Girls’ Trips, and Celebrations!
This itinerary adapts easily for groups. Palmers Lane Estate sleeps up to 97 guests across six self-contained houses and cottages, and the combination of private spaces and generous communal areas means a group of eight or eighteen can share the property without it ever feeling crowded.
For a hens getaway or a milestone birthday, the paint and sip on Day 3 morning becomes a centrepiece activity, the mobile massage or yoga session on Day 2 morning works beautifully as a group booking, and the fire pit evenings carry a natural social energy that no organised entertainment can replicate.
Receive a complimentary cheese platter and wine on arrival when you stay a minimum of 2 nights. You can also save 10% when you book direct at palmerslaneestate.com.au using code CLUB for 10% off or call Guy and Sandra on 02 4998 7611 to discuss the property configuration that suits your group best.
Frequently Asked Questions - Relax and Reset
How many days do you need in the Hunter Valley to properly relax?
Three nights and four days is the sweet spot. Two nights is enjoyable but tends to feel rushed once you factor in travel days. Three nights gives you one day to arrive and settle, one to properly restore, and one to explore, with a slow final morning as the finish. Most guests who stay three nights say they wished they had booked four.
Is a midweek Hunter Valley stay worth it?
Absolutely. Midweek stays in the Hunter Valley are typically quieter, more relaxed at the cellar doors, and often better value. If your schedule allows it, Sunday to Wednesday or Monday to Thursday are genuinely excellent windows.
Can you arrange a mobile massage or yoga session at Palmers Lane Estate?
Yes. Mobile massage therapists and yoga instructors can come directly to Palmers Lane Estate, keeping the restorative experience on the property. Book ahead, as the best providers fill quickly. Guy and Sandra can help with recommendations when you make your booking.
What are the best cellar doors to visit in the Hunter Valley for a relaxing day?
For an unhurried tasting experience, the Palmers Lane Wine Eco Trail is the natural starting point, with Horner Wines on the estate itself, John Wallace Wines and Moorebank Vineyard a short walk further, and Calais Estate completing the trail. For a wider range, Brokenwood Wines offers a state-of-the-art cellar door with outdoor terrace and wine museum. Tempus Two at Roche Estate suits groups with mixed wine knowledge, with approachable wines and gin tastings available.
